Notes from the Winemaker: 2014 was the fourth year in our recent five-year drought cycle but still continued the quality streak of both the stellar 2012 and 2013 vintages that preceded it. Unfortunately, yields fell off a bit and were far below average. Rain in late February and March relieved some of the drought induced stress on the vines and early bud break moved up the "growing" clock that ran ahead of schedule through harvest. Summer weather was ideal with no heat spikes so that the berries developed into a well balanced crop with mature phenolics, great acidity and firm tannins that will enhance your early drinking enjoyment while ensuring many rewards for cellaring this treasure. The Estate Grown blend is once again seen in its traditional 45% Merlot that contributes power and 55% Cabernet Sauvignon that adds a note of elegance. The color is a deep yet translucent ruby that just seems to glow in the glass. On the nose you will appreciate scents of dried rose petals and black cherry along with a hint of spice. The palate carries forward with a sensual mouthfeel supported by sweet tannins framed by bright acidity while displaying integrated notes of black cherry, red berries, rhubarb, spice and all complemented by just a touch of oak. All this leads to a multi-layered finish that seems to resonate on and on.
